What is WINS?
WINS (Windows Internet Name Service) is a Microsoft service that provides NetBIOS name to IP address mapping. It functions similarly to DNS, but for NetBIOS names used by older Windows systems. WINS allows computers on a network to locate each other by name, simplifying network communication, particularly in environments with dynamic IP addresses. While largely superseded by DNS and modern networking protocols, WINS may still be found in legacy Windows environments.
