TIPS stands for Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities. They are a type of treasury bond issued by the U.S. government that are indexed to inflation to protect investors from the decline in the purchasing power of their money. The principal of a TIPS increases with inflation and decreases with deflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI). When a TIPS matures, you are paid the adjusted principal or the original principal, whichever is greater.
