A Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) is a main component of the GSM/UMTS network architecture and is responsible for the delivery of data packets from and to the mobile stations within its geographical service area. Its main functions include packet routing and transfer, mobility management (attach/detach and location management), logical link management, and authentication and charging functions. It keeps track of the location of mobile devices and handles security and access control. It interfaces with the GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node) to connect to external packet data networks, such as the internet.
