A Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) is a main component of the 3G and 4G (UMTS, LTE) mobile telecommunications network. It is responsible for connecting the mobile network to the internet. The GGSN converts GPRS packets coming from the Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) into the appropriate packet data protocol (PDP) format, such as IP or PPP, and sends them out on the corresponding packet data network (PDN). In the downlink direction, data packets are routed through the GGSN to the appropriate SGSN, which then transmits them to the mobile device. The GGSN also performs authentication and charging functions.
