What is MME?

MME stands for Mobility Management Entity. It is a key control-node in a 4G LTE (Long-Term Evolution) network. It is responsible for tasks such as tracking and paging mobile devices (UEs), managing security, handling authentication and authorization, and managing mobility (handover) between different base stations (eNodeBs). Essentially, it manages the connection between the mobile device and the core network.

What other technologies are related to MME?

MME Competitor Technologies

The SGSN (Serving GPRS Support Node) provides packet routing to/from the UE within its service area, for 2G and 3G networks. It's functionally similar to the MME, but for older generation networks. Thus, it's a competitor in that older technologies are replaced by LTE/EPC.

The AMF (Access and Mobility Management Function) is the core network element responsible for access control and mobility management in 5G networks. It replaces the MME functionality in 5G, making it a direct competitor.

The GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node) is similar to the PGW and provides internet connectivity for 2G/3G networks. Its function is now performed by the PGW in 4G/LTE, making it a competitor.

The SMF (Session Management Function) manages user sessions and is part of the 5G core network architecture. The MME's session management responsibilities are moved to the SMF in 5G networks.

The HLR (Home Location Register) is used in 2G and 3G networks for subscriber management. The HSS performs similar functions in 4G/LTE, so HLR represents a competing technology.

5GC (5G Core) is the core network architecture of 5G, which is a replacement of the EPC for 4G/LTE. Thus, it competes with the architecture containing the MME.

The UDM (Unified Data Management) is part of the 5G core. It serves a function similar to the HSS in the EPC, consolidating subscriber data. Thus, it is a competitor.

The MSC (Mobile Switching Center) handles circuit-switched voice calls in 2G and 3G networks. VoLTE is the modern equivalent over LTE, so MSC is a competitor.

MME Complementary Technologies

The PGW (Packet Data Network Gateway) is a key component in the EPC architecture, providing connectivity to external networks. It works with the MME, which performs control plane functions.

The SGW (Serving Gateway) serves as the mobility anchor in the EPC architecture. It works with the MME to route user plane data while the UE is moving.
mentioned alongside MME in 69% (342) of relevant job posts
The PCRF (Policy and Charging Rules Function) is a component in the EPC architecture responsible for policy control and charging rules. The MME interacts with the PCRF.
