Per-VLAN Spanning Tree (PVST) is a Cisco proprietary version of Spanning Tree Protocol (STP). It runs a separate instance of STP for each VLAN in a network. This allows for VLAN-based load balancing and optimized paths, as different VLANs can use different spanning tree topologies. PVST+ is an enhancement that allows PVST to interact with devices running the standard IEEE 802.1Q STP. It is commonly used in Cisco-based networks to prevent loops and improve network efficiency.
