Liquid penetrant testing (LPT) is a widely used non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to detect surface-breaking defects in non-porous materials. A liquid dye is applied to the surface of the part being inspected, allowed to penetrate any flaws, excess penetrant is removed, and then a developer is applied to draw the penetrant out of the flaws, making them visible to the inspector.
