What is Cat5?

Category 5 cable (Cat 5) is a twisted pair cable for computer networks. Since 2001, the TIA/EIA-568-B standard defines the Cat 5 enhanced specification (Cat 5e) which uses more stringent specifications for crosstalk and system noise. Cat 5 is commonly used for Ethernet networks running at 10 or 100 Mbps. While it can theoretically support Gigabit Ethernet, Cat 5e is the recommended standard for that purpose.
