What is Network Address Translation?

Network Address Translation (NAT) is a method of remapping one IP address space into another by modifying network address information in the IP header of packets while they are in transit across a traffic routing device. NAT is commonly used to allow multiple devices on a private network to share a single public IP address when communicating with the internet. It also provides a level of security by hiding the internal network structure from the outside world.
