What is GRE Tunneling?

GRE (Generic Routing Encapsulation) is a tunneling protocol that can encapsulate a wide variety of network layer protocols inside virtual point-to-point links over an Internet Protocol network. It is commonly used to create VPNs, extend networks across the internet, and transport non-IP protocols over IP networks. GRE adds a header to the encapsulated packet, specifying the protocol type of the payload, and then transmits the resulting packet over the IP network.
