What is MODIS?

MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) is a key instrument aboard the Terra (EOS AM) and Aqua (EOS PM) satellites. It views the entire Earth surface every 1 to 2 days, acquiring data in 36 spectral bands. This data is used to monitor a wide range of Earth processes, including changes in vegetation, ocean temperature, cloud cover, and aerosols. MODIS data is commonly used in climate and weather models, as well as for monitoring natural disasters and environmental changes.

What other technologies are related to MODIS?

MODIS Competitor Technologies

VIIRS is another Earth observing sensor that, like MODIS, collects data on land, atmosphere, and ocean properties. It has some overlapping capabilities with MODIS, thus a competitor.

MODIS Complementary Technologies

Landsat provides higher spatial resolution data than MODIS, making it complementary for studies requiring finer detail. While some overlap exists, the difference in resolution often makes them useful together.
