What is Calipso?

CALIPSO (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations) is a NASA/CNES satellite mission designed to improve our understanding of the roles that clouds and aerosols (airborne particles) play in regulating Earth's climate. It uses lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) and other instruments to provide vertical profiles of cloud and aerosol layers in the atmosphere. This data is used for climate modeling, weather forecasting, and air quality studies.
