IMPS, or Instant Messaging and Presence Service, was an early standard for instant messaging developed by the Wireless Village initiative (later the Open Mobile Alliance). It allowed users to see the presence status of contacts (online, offline, busy, etc.) and exchange instant messages. While initially promising, IMPS was largely superseded by other protocols such as SIP/SIMPLE and ultimately became less widely adopted than alternatives like SMS or proprietary messaging platforms.
