What is EEPROM?

EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) is a type of non-volatile memory used in computers and other electronic devices to store relatively small amounts of data but allowing individual bytes to be erased and reprogrammed electrically. This contrasts with earlier PROMs (Programmable Read-Only Memory) which could only be written once, and EPROMs (Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) which required exposure to ultraviolet light to erase. EEPROMs are commonly used to store configuration data, firmware, and other data that needs to be retained when power is removed, but also needs to be updated occasionally. Common applications include storing BIOS in computers, storing settings in various consumer electronics, and storing calibration data in sensors.
