Dye Penetrant Testing (DPT), also known as Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI) or Penetrant Testing (PT), is a widely used non-destructive testing (NDT) method to detect surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials (metals, plastics, or ceramics). It involves applying a visible or fluorescent dye to the surface of the part, allowing the penetrant to dwell, removing excess penetrant, applying a developer to draw out the penetrant trapped in defects, and then visually inspecting the surface for indications of defects under appropriate lighting conditions. It's commonly used to find cracks, porosity, laps, seams, and other surface flaws in manufactured components, welds, and in-service equipment.
