A Distributed Control System (DCS) is a computerized control system for a process or plant, usually with a large number of control loops, in which autonomous controllers are distributed throughout the system, but there is central operator supervisory control. This is in contrast to non-distributed control systems, such as a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system, where all control is performed by a centralized controller. DCS systems are commonly used in manufacturing plants, power plants, oil and gas refineries, water and wastewater treatment facilities, and other industrial environments to monitor and control complex processes.
