What is confocal?

Confocal microscopy is an optical imaging technique used to increase image contrast and/or to reconstruct three-dimensional images by blocking out-of-focus light in thick specimens. It achieves this by using a spatial pinhole to eliminate out-of-focus light or glare from the sample, generating much clearer images than traditional microscopy, especially for thick samples. It is commonly used in biological research and material science.
