Casper refers to a family of proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus algorithms, primarily associated with the Ethereum blockchain's transition from proof-of-work (PoW) to PoS. Two main implementations were initially proposed: Casper the Friendly Finality Gadget (Casper FFG) and Casper the Friendly Block Proposal Algorithm (Casper CBC). Casper FFG was implemented as a hybrid PoW/PoS system, while Casper CBC was a more theoretical, research-oriented approach. Ultimately, Ethereum adopted the Beacon Chain and the PoS consensus mechanism it uses which is based on, but evolved from, the original Casper ideas. PoS systems like Casper are used to secure a blockchain network by having validators stake their cryptocurrency to participate in block creation and validation, reducing the energy consumption compared to PoW.
