What is bacterial transformation?

Bacterial transformation is a process of horizontal gene transfer by which some bacteria take up foreign genetic material (naked DNA) from the environment. This DNA can then be incorporated into the bacterium's genome. In molecular biology, transformation is commonly used to introduce recombinant DNA, such as plasmids, into bacteria for various purposes, including gene cloning, protein expression, and genetic engineering.
