What is XAUI?

XAUI (pronounced "zai") is a high-speed computer bus standard transmitting data at 10 gigabits per second. It's primarily used in 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) systems to connect a 10GbE Media Access Controller (MAC) to a physical layer (PHY) device over a backplane or short distance. XAUI reduces the number of physical lanes compared to a wider parallel interface, simplifying board layout and connector requirements. It employs 8B/10B encoding, resulting in an actual line rate of 3.125 GHz per lane across four lanes.
