What is WIM?

WIM can refer to a few different technologies, so without more context, it's difficult to be precise. However, a common interpretation is Windows Imaging Format (WIM). This is a file-based disk image format introduced by Microsoft for deploying Windows operating systems. A WIM file contains a set of files and associated metadata, enabling a single image to be deployed to multiple computer configurations. It supports features like single-instance storage (SIS), which reduces image size by storing identical files only once, and non-destructive imaging, allowing changes to be made without affecting the original image. WIM images are commonly used for system deployment, recovery, and backup.
