A vSwitch (virtual switch) is a software-based switch that performs the same functions as a hardware-based switch, but within a virtualized environment. It allows virtual machines (VMs) running on the same hypervisor host to communicate with each other and with the external network. vSwitches forward network traffic between VMs, and between VMs and the physical network, based on MAC addresses. They are a key component of network virtualization, enabling flexible and scalable network configurations in cloud computing and data centers.
