Vinyl is a type of plastic (polyvinyl chloride or PVC) used to create vinyl records, also known as LPs or phonograph records. These records are analog sound storage mediums. Sound is recorded by creating grooves on the surface of the vinyl disc. When played on a turntable, a stylus (needle) traces these grooves, vibrating and converting the physical undulations into an electrical signal that is amplified and output as sound. Vinyl records were a dominant format for recorded music for much of the 20th century and have experienced a resurgence in popularity in recent years.
