UAF (Universal Authentication Framework) is one of the two original specifications created by the FIDO (Fast Identity Online) Alliance for passwordless authentication. UAF relies on public key cryptography and biometric or PIN-based local user verification on the user's device. The device securely stores the user's private key, and the server only stores the corresponding public key. Common usage involves replacing passwords with biometric authentication (e.g., fingerprint, facial recognition) or a PIN. The user authenticates to the service using their device and the server verifies the user's identity using the stored public key.
