Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) encrypts database files, protecting data at rest. It's commonly used to meet compliance requirements and protect against unauthorized access to physical storage. TDE performs real-time I/O encryption and decryption of the data and log files. The database is encrypted using a database encryption key (DEK), which is stored in the database boot record for availability during recovery. The DEK is protected by a certificate stored in the master database of the server, or by an asymmetric key protected by an EKM module.
