It provides guidelines for encoding texts in a way that is machine-readable and enables their use for various purposes such as research, archiving, and digital publication. The TEI Guidelines are widely used in the humanities for encoding a variety of textual materials, including literary works, historical documents, and linguistic data. TEI uses XML as its encoding language.
