Surface Mount Technology (SMT) is a method for producing electronic circuits in which the components are mounted or placed directly onto the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs). Electronic devices so made are called Surface Mount Devices (SMDs). SMT has largely replaced through-hole technology in modern electronics manufacturing because it allows for increased circuit density, smaller component sizes, and higher levels of automation in manufacturing.
