What is SPNEGO?
SPNEGO (Simple and Protected GSSAPI Negotiation Mechanism) is a GSSAPI 'meta-mechanism' used to negotiate an authentication mechanism. It is commonly used by Microsoft Windows systems to negotiate Kerberos or NTLM authentication. SPNEGO allows a client and server to negotiate which GSSAPI security mechanism to use. If both support Kerberos, it will be used; otherwise, a less secure mechanism like NTLM may be used. It is often encountered in web applications requiring Windows integrated authentication.
