S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) is a monitoring system included in computer hard disk drives (HDDs), solid-state drives (SSDs), and eMMC drives. It detects and reports on various indicators of drive reliability with the intent of enabling the anticipation of hardware failures. When SMART data indicates a possible imminent failure, software running on the host system may notify the user to copy the data and replace the drive. While SMART is useful in predicting failures, it is not a replacement for regular backups.
