What is serial ports?

A serial port is a serial communication interface through which information transfers in or out one bit at a time. It was commonly used to connect computers to peripherals such as modems, mice, and printers. While largely superseded by USB and other interfaces, serial ports are still found in some embedded systems and industrial equipment for control and data acquisition.
