What is ROLAP?
ROLAP (Relational Online Analytical Processing) is a type of OLAP that performs dynamic multidimensional analysis of data stored in relational databases rather than in multidimensional databases. ROLAP tools rely on manipulating the data stored in the database to calculate summaries and aggregations required for analysis. Because ROLAP uses relational databases, it can handle large data volumes more readily than other OLAP architectures like MOLAP. However, query performance can be slower than MOLAP due to the need to access and process relational data on demand.
