What is PVST+?

Per-VLAN Spanning Tree Plus (PVST+) is a Cisco enhancement to the original IEEE 802.1D Spanning Tree Protocol (STP). PVST+ maintains a separate spanning tree instance for each VLAN configured in the network. This allows for VLAN-based load balancing and optimized path selection, as different VLANs can forward traffic through different paths, avoiding the limitations of a single spanning tree instance for the entire network. It also interoperates with devices running Common Spanning Tree (CST), the default spanning tree on many switches.
