What is Portals?

In the context of web technologies, Portals (formerly known as <portal>) are a proposed web standard that aim to enable seamless navigation between different web pages or web applications, without requiring a full page reload. They are intended to improve the user experience by providing faster transitions and maintaining application state across navigation. Portals allow embedding another web page as an 'island' within the current page, which can then be seamlessly activated to replace the current page. While the proposal saw some initial experimentation, it has not achieved widespread adoption and its future is uncertain.
