What is plain film?

Plain film, often referring to radiography or X-ray film, is a sheet of polyester plastic coated with radiation-sensitive emulsion. When exposed to X-rays, the film undergoes a chemical change creating a latent image. This image is then developed to produce a visible image used in medical diagnostics (e.g., bone fractures, lung conditions) and industrial non-destructive testing.
