What is PIM-SM?
Protocol Independent Multicast - Sparse Mode (PIM-SM) is a multicast routing protocol that uses a rendezvous point (RP) to establish distribution trees. It is 'protocol independent' because it can leverage underlying unicast routing protocols to discover routes. PIM-SM operates using explicit join messages towards the RP, building a shared tree which can then be pruned if a more direct source-based tree is desired. It's commonly used in networks where multicast group members are sparsely distributed.
