What is Phased Array?

A phased array is an antenna array in which the relative phases of the signals fed to the individual antenna elements are varied to steer the beam in a particular direction. Phased arrays are used in radar, sonar, and wireless communication systems to electronically steer beams of radio waves or sound waves without physically moving the antenna. This allows for rapid beam scanning and tracking of targets.

What other technologies are related to Phased Array?

Phased Array Competitor Technologies

Pitch-and-catch is an ultrasonic testing technique where one transducer transmits a signal and another receives it. It's a competitor because while phased arrays can also do pitch-catch, this is a more basic form of ultrasonic inspection.

Pulse echo is a common ultrasonic testing technique where a transducer emits a pulse and listens for the echo. While phased arrays can perform pulse-echo, it is a more basic alternative, so it competes.

Acoustic resonance techniques use resonant frequencies to detect flaws or changes in material properties. While distinct from phased arrays, they serve a similar purpose of material characterization and flaw detection, making them competitors.

Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) is another ultrasonic technique for detecting flaws based on diffracted waves. It's a competitor because it offers an alternative method for similar inspection goals.

Magnetic Particle Testing is used for surface and near-surface flaw detection in ferromagnetic materials. It is an alternative NDT method.

Phased Array Complementary Technologies

IMUs can be used to track the position and orientation of the phased array probe, allowing for more accurate 3D imaging and defect localization. IMUs are used in conjunction with Phased Array.
