What is peristaltic pumps?

A peristaltic pump is a type of positive displacement pump used for pumping a variety of fluids. The fluid is contained within a flexible tube fitted inside a circular pump casing. A rotor with a number of 'rollers', 'shoes', or 'wipers' attached to the external circumference compresses the flexible tube. As the rotor turns, the part of the tube under compression is pinched closed, forcing the fluid to be pumped to move through the tube. Additionally, as the tube is pinched closed, it draws fluid into the tube. This process is called peristalsis and is used in a variety of medical and industrial applications.

Pipettes, especially automated pipetting systems, can serve as alternatives to peristaltic pumps for dispensing liquids, particularly in laboratory settings. While peristaltic pumps offer continuous flow and are suitable for applications requiring precise dosing or transfer of fluids, pipettes are used for transferring discrete volumes, and are a very common alternative for small volumes.
