What is PECS?

PECS stands for Picture Exchange Communication System. It's an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) system primarily used to teach communication skills to individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities who have limited or no verbal communication. PECS involves teaching individuals to exchange pictures for desired items or activities, helping them initiate communication and develop functional communication skills. It progresses through several phases, gradually increasing the complexity of communication and eventually leading to the development of sentence structure and spontaneous communication.
