What is optoelectronics?

Optoelectronics is the study and application of electronic devices that source, detect and control light, usually considered as the visible, infrared, and ultraviolet portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Optoelectronic devices are electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical transducers, or instruments that modify optical radiation by electrical means. Common examples include LEDs, laser diodes, photodetectors, and optical fibers. They are used in a wide range of applications such as optical communication, displays, sensing, and lighting.
