What is NPIV?

N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) is a Fibre Channel protocol feature that allows a single physical N_Port to register with the fabric using multiple worldwide port names (WWPNs). This enables multiple virtual machines running on a single physical server to have their own unique identities in the storage area network (SAN), improving manageability, security, and resource allocation. It is commonly used in virtualized environments to provide dedicated storage access to each virtual machine, allowing independent management and monitoring of their storage resources.

What other technologies are related to NPIV?

NPIV Complementary Technologies

The HMC (Hardware Management Console) is used to manage IBM Power Systems servers, and it plays a role in configuring and managing NPIV on those systems. It provides the interface through which NPIV virtual adapters are created and managed, making it a complementary technology.
