What is NP?

NP most likely refers to Nondeterministic Polynomial time. In computational complexity theory, NP is a complexity class used to classify decision problems. A decision problem is in NP if a 'yes' answer can be verified in polynomial time given a certificate (a piece of evidence). In simpler terms, if someone gives you a potential solution to the problem, you can quickly check if it's correct. Many important problems are in NP, such as the traveling salesman problem, the boolean satisfiability problem (SAT), and the graph coloring problem. However, whether all problems in NP can be solved in polynomial time (the 'P versus NP' problem) is one of the biggest unsolved questions in computer science.
