What is non-SQL databases?

NoSQL databases (often referred to as "not only SQL") provide a mechanism for storage and retrieval of data that is modeled in means other than the tabular relations used in relational databases. These databases are often used for big data and real-time web applications. They are particularly useful when dealing with unstructured or semi-structured data, high volumes of data, and the need for high availability and scalability.
