What is mRNA?

mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) technology uses genetically engineered mRNA to instruct cells to make a specific protein. In the context of vaccines, this protein is often a harmless piece of a virus or bacteria. The immune system recognizes this protein as foreign and produces antibodies and immune cells to fight it, providing protection against future infection. It is also used in cancer research and treatment and protein replacement therapies.
