What is Model Based Definition?
Model-Based Definition (MBD) is the practice of using 3D models within CAD software to define products, components, and assemblies. MBD embeds all necessary product and manufacturing information (PMI) directly within the 3D model, such as geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T), surface finish, material specifications, and other annotations. This eliminates the need for traditional 2D drawings in many cases, streamlines communication, reduces errors, and supports downstream activities like manufacturing, inspection, and simulation.
