What is microelectronics?

Microelectronics is a subfield of electronics involving the design, fabrication, and application of very small electronic circuit components. These components, typically on the scale of micrometers or nanometers, are integrated onto semiconductor materials, most commonly silicon, to create integrated circuits (ICs). Microelectronics is used in virtually all electronic devices, from smartphones and computers to medical equipment and automotive systems, enabling miniaturization, increased performance, and reduced power consumption.
