MBGP (Multiprotocol Extensions for BGP) is an extension to the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) that allows it to carry routing information for multiple network layer protocols, such as IPv6 and multicast routes, in addition to the standard IPv4 unicast routes. It achieves this through the use of address family identifiers (AFIs) and subsequent address family identifiers (SAFIs). This enables BGP to be used as a universal routing protocol in complex network environments requiring the dissemination of routes for different types of network traffic. It is commonly used in VPNs and to support IPv6 routing over an IPv4 infrastructure.
