What is MASINT?

MASINT, or Measurement and Signature Intelligence, is a technical intelligence discipline that involves gathering intelligence through the analysis of data derived from physical phenomena intrinsic to targets or sources. It detects, tracks, identifies, or describes the signatures (distinctive characteristics) of fixed or dynamic targets. MASINT exploits a variety of sensors and techniques, including radar, acoustics, nuclear radiation, and chemical signatures, to provide unique intelligence that complements other intelligence disciplines. It is commonly used to monitor weapons proliferation, track troop movements, and analyze industrial activities.
