LOPA, or Layer of Protection Analysis, is a semi-quantitative risk assessment methodology used to evaluate the adequacy of independent protection layers (IPLs) in mitigating process hazards. It's commonly used in the process industries (e.g., chemical, oil and gas) to determine if the existing safety systems are sufficient to reduce the risk of a hazardous event to a tolerable level. LOPA builds upon Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies and helps to identify the necessary safety instrumented functions (SIFs) and other protection layers to prevent or mitigate consequences from identified hazards.
