What is Live Tiles?

Live Tiles were a graphical user interface feature on Windows Phone, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. They are rectangular tiles on the Start screen that dynamically display updated information, such as news headlines, weather forecasts, social media updates, or upcoming appointments. They differ from static icons by providing at-a-glance information without requiring the user to open the associated application. Live Tiles could also be 'flipped' to reveal additional information, and their appearance could be customized by the user. Microsoft eventually retired Live Tiles, replacing them with widgets in later versions of Windows.
