**Liquid Penetrant Inspection**

What is Liquid Penetrant Inspection?

Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI), also called Dye Penetrant Inspection (DPI) or Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI), is a widely used non-destructive testing (NDT) method to detect surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials (metals, plastics, or ceramics). LPI is used to detect casting, forging and welding surface defects such as hairline cracks, surface porosity, leaks in new products, and fatigue cracks on in-service components. LPI involves applying a liquid dye to the surface of the material, allowing it to seep into any defects, removing excess penetrant, and then applying a developer to draw the penetrant back to the surface where the defect becomes visible.
